Campus Kitchen at the University of Kentucky

The Campus Kitchen at the University of Kentucky is an on-campus student service organization that provides a sustainable approach to reducing food waste on college campuses while also providing healthy meals to those struggling with hunger. Our student-powered hunger relief organization was established April 2014 and is an affiliate of the national organization, The Campus Kitchen Projects, which in 2016 recognized us as “Campus Kitchen of the Year” out of nearly sixty across the nation.

In the United States, 40% of post-consumer food is wasted each year while 1 in 6 Americans are hungry. Over 750,000 Kentuckians do not always know where their next meal will come from. We provide solutions to address this need on campus and in our community.

Our Solutions

Food Rescue
We pick up unused, quality food from UK dining facilities, local farms, farmers' markets, restaurants and grocery stores.

Cooking and Food Preparation
Volunteers prepare healthy, balanced meals with the food donations in our campus kitchen.

Meal Delivery
Volunteers deliver, distribute and enjoy well-balanced meals with participants. Through established partnerships, we also deliver grocery bags with recovered food to children, youth, families, individuals and older adults experiencing poverty and hunger.

Empowerment and Education
We go beyond serving meals by promoting poverty solutions, implementing garden and nutrition initiatives, convening food policy events, leading cooking classes and hosting community game nights. It is our goal to not only provide individuals with access to food, but also the empowerment and education needed to make informed and confident decisions surrounding their food choices.
