Dane is a senior Dietetics major from Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Why did you choose to study Dietetics?

I have had type 1 diabetes for 20 years now, basically living a life of dietetics my whole life, and just wanted to learn more about what I am consuming into my body. I also want to be able to help others with their daily nutritional regimen.

What is your favorite part of studying Dietetics at UK?

My favorite part of studying dietetics is that everything we learn on a daily basis is so applicable in our everyday lives. I love how we can learn about healthy foods in class to consume if we need more fiber and I can go make that food right after class.

Dietetics has also had a huge impact on my friends and family because I can take what I learn in class and expand and share that, helping them learn how to eat healthier.

I also love dietetics because we have so many students and teachers that just want to help people and almost everyone in the dietetics major here is so outgoing and kind.

What are your plans after graduation?

After I graduate, I want to go to an internship and get my RDN certification, hopefully in the clinical setting. I want to go on to PA school and use the knowledge I obtain from my undergrad and internship to give back to my community in the endocrinology field.

I want to show my patients and other medical professionals that we do not always need to prescribe more medicine - the baseline of health is based on what we eat. The food we eat could make us feel just as good, if not better, than some medicines do.
