DPD Program Highlights

Graduates of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) have a BS degree in Dietetics and are eligible to apply for a supervised practice experience (dietetic internship). It fulfills the Accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) knowledge requirements.

The philosophy of the Didactic Program in Dietetics at the University of Kentucky is based on the belief that the dietetian is the food and nutrition expert and that nutrition is an important basis of the health and well-being of all human beings functioning in a diverse society.

Curriculum

  • Two academic years, 4 semesters, of UK CORE and pre-professional courses
  • Two years of intensive academic, professional and experiential study
  • Students must attain a GPA of 2.4/4.0 to progress into major coursework
  • Didactice coursework is 4 semesters:
    • Junior/Year 3 - Fall and Spring
    • Senior/Year 4 - Fall and Spring 

Outcomes for DPD Graduates

  • ACEND Core knowledge requirements met and Verification Statement earned
  • BS in Dietetics
  • Eligible to apply to a Supervised Practice Program (SPP), also known as a dietetic internship. 

Admission to the Major: Dietetics

  • Entrance Requirements
    • Students who are a pre-human nutrition or pre-dietetics major can apply for major status when they have completed the DHN pre-major courses (BIO 148, CHE 105, CHE 107, CHE 111, CHE 113, DHN 212, and DHN 241) with a pre-major GPA of 2.8 or higher;
    • Pre-dietetics majors must also have a cumulative GPA of 2.4 or higher.
  • Application Process
  • Application Deadlines:
    • September 15th to be considered for Fall admission
    • February 15th to be considered for Spring admission
    • July 15th to be considered for Summer admission
  • Exploratory Courses:
    • DHN 101: Human Nutrition and Wellness, 3 credits
    • DHN 212: Introductory Nutrition (section for non-majors), 3 credits
